Ukukhulisa Parkwood Learning Centre, situated in Parkwood, Cape Town, was established to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for children in the community. Parkwood, like many surrounding areas, faces challenges such as high unemployment, poverty, substance abuse, and single-parent households. Many families struggle to provide consistent educational support and nutritious meals for their children. Our centre aims to address these challenges by creating a nurturing space where children can learn, grow, and develop positive values.

The centre began with a small group of learners and a dedicated team committed to improving educational opportunities for children in the area. We provide a structured learning environment where young learners receive guidance in their early development and foundational education. Our goal is to ensure that every child who attends the centre is supported academically, emotionally, and socially.

In addition to our early learning programme, we cater for older children who attend our afternoon development classes. These sessions provide assistance with homework, mentorship, and opportunities to participate in activities such as drama, creative arts, and group discussions. Learners also benefit from moral and religious teachings that promote positive character development and respect for their community. To support their wellbeing, children attending these sessions are provided with a nutritious meal.

Our holiday programme, which takes place during the school holidays, offers children the opportunity to participate in educational and recreational activities. These include creative arts, drama workshops, educational outings, and other enriching experiences designed to broaden their knowledge and encourage teamwork and confidence.

The centre also recognises the importance of supporting families. Through our parent development programme, parents are offered life-skills workshops facilitated by trained professionals and community mentors. These sessions aim to empower parents with the tools and guidance needed to manage daily challenges and support their children’s growth. Parents attending these programmes are also provided with refreshments and meals during the sessions.

Our vision for the Ukukhulisa Parkwood Learning Centre is to continue expanding our programmes so that more children and families in the community can benefit from educational support, mentorship, and a safe place where meaningful learning can take place.
