Al Huda Lower Crossroads ECD

Schedule

Al Huda Lower Crossroads ECD Centre, situated in Philippi, was opened in 2015. Most of the parents are from the Eastern Cape. Lower Crossroads is one of the most crime ridden areas in the Western Cape. There is a high rate of unemployment, alcohol and drug abuse, single parent families and orphans in the area. The centre started with one trained teacher and 25 learners. The centre provides the learners with two hot meals every day. We have created a healthy environment in which meaningful learning can take place.

We cater for an average of 35 older children aged 7-14 years who attend our afternoon development classes. There they are mentored in drama and assisted with homework tasks. They are also given religious teachings and studies. In addition, these youngsters are provided with a hot meal every day. This is to ensure that they have at least one nutritious meal for the day. Our holiday programme which is run every winter during the school holidays for six weeks, offer extramural programmes such as the creative arts, drama classes and educational excursions. This programme is run in conjunction with Marikana and has attracted about 80 learners. We have since refurbished the after-school building which is still a zinc structure.

Our parent programme offers parents classes in life skills where they are coached by professional life coaches and trained social workers to help them cope with challenges in their lives. Parents are provided with snacks and meals during these sessions.
We have managed to send some of our older students to Durban to further their studies in better circumstances than their home environment. These studies are fully sponsored by donors.

Together let's make a difference in a child's life!
