The Flamingo ECD Centre, situated in Lansdowne, was opened in 2021 by Ukukhulisa. Flamingo informal settlement is home to about 100 families. The area is plagued by chronic drug misuse and alcohol abuse. Children are mostly malnourished and suffer from fetal alcohol syndrome. The organization managed to fully refurbish an old container which had previously been used as a school. Refurbishing this container into a fully functioning and equipped classroom cost the organization in excess of R50 000.
The centre initially catered for 3-6 year olds, but now accepts one-year-olds as well. At present the centre has 24 learners. Learners are provided with two hot meals, breakfast and lunch, every day. The centre operates from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The centre was very proud when one of our previous students gained six distinctions in Grade 6. That student is currently in Grade 10.
