The Belgravia ECD Centre, situated in the suburb of Athlone, was opened in February 2022 by a group of concerned citizens who advocate for quality education for all children. The intention was to facilitate about 25 learners, however, by April 2022, the student population had increased to 55 learners. All the learners are from the Vlei informal settlement, an area that is plagued by drugs, gangs and a high unemployment rate. This environment is not conducive to a healthy lifestyle as many children come from alcoholic homes and single parent families.

The ECD Centre rented a space from a church in the first year of its existence. Children were provided with breakfast and lunch daily. Three trained teachers were employed in that year. In addition, three parents were employed to assist with cleaning and cooking, at the same time empowering them and giving them dignity. The ECD Center has two very successful outings and a very impressive year-end function.
In January 2023, the school moved into a fully equipped ECD Centre next to Belgravia High School. The centre had three classrooms with a very well-equipped playground. This new centre cost the organization R250 000 to purchase and refurbish. At this time the student population grew to 76 learners, all of them from the Vlei. The organization employed Level 5 / NQF5 trained teachers for all three classes. The centre presently has a staff complement of eight teachers.

An achievement for the Belgravia ECD Centre is that one of the parents completed a NQF4 qualification at Boston College and is now a full time teacher at the school. Her studies were paid for by the organization. This is part of our empowerment programme to uplift the parent community in the area. At the end of the year, 23 learners successfully graduated to Grade One for 2023.
