The Makhaza ECD Centre, situated in Khayalitsha, was opened in 2024. The centre operates from a mosque where we occupy two classrooms. The centre employs three qualified teachers from the area who possess up to a NQF6 level education. We also employ local staff to assist with cleaning. The centre attracted 50 learners in the first two weeks after opening. All the learners attending had not been to any other educational institute before they joined our centre. We expect the centre to be fully functional by the end of 2024.
The centre plans to start a parent programme in the third quarter of 2024. Our aim is to attract about 50 parents and teach them to grow vegetables to help them become financially independent and sustainable. At the same time we hope to get qualified social workers and life coaches to train parents to deal with life challenges.
We are planning to start afternoon student development classes immediately. We are hoping to attract 50 youth from the area. The aim is to replicate the programme in Marikana and Al Huda by offering interesting extramural activities for learners after school.
